Writing, Reading, and Editing
Horses and reading have always been Joyce’s favorite ways to spend time, and as she grew up writing joined the herd. When she isn’t spending time with her horses, she is either writing or reading about them. As her writing progressed and she worked towards her BA in Creative Writing and English, Joyce discovered she has a passion and talent for editing.
She has been published with a small group in SNHU’s Creative Writing online journal, The Penman Review, with the article “From Nothing to Something: Building Your Blog’s Audience.”
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell Chosen by a Horse by Susan Richards, and The Fault in Our Stars by Jon Green are three of her all-time favorite books.
Horse
Summer reading club was always a large part of Joyce’s summers. Every year everyone had to read a book based on the theme and one year the theme was “sports.” Her mother’s heart sank because Joyce never showed interest in sports. However, Joyce proudly came home one day with a book about horse show jumping to meet the criteria of reading a sports book and to fuel her horse obsession.
That show jumping book inspired Joyce’s mother to sign her up for her first horseback riding lesson knowing that Joyce would either love it or hate it. They returned home after that lesson reporting to her father that he would be trading in his motorcycles for horses, which he eventually did.
Joyce has been riding horses for over twenty years. She loves to jump and trail ride with Boo Boo, her American Quarter Horse gelding she has been partnered with for over fifteen years. She also loves to pole bend with Trinity, her paint mare she has been partnered with for over ten years.
